Trie-sur-Baïse
Trie-sur-Baïse
On the Baïse, on the borders of the Bigorre and the Astarac, Trie-sur-Baïse is one of those new towns called bastides, founded by a paréage contract signed in 1323 between Jean de Trie, seneschal of Toulouse and representative of the king, the lords of Duffort and of Puydarrieux and the abbot of L'Escaladieu; the town took the seneschal's name, and its customs of 1325 call it bastida de Tria. Besieged and taken by the Black Prince in 1355, pillaged, rebuilt after 1363, fortified and endowed with a citadel, two hospitals and a Carmelite convent founded in 1365, it knew its golden age in the 15th century, when in 1444 the church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, with its Flamboyant Gothic spire, was begun. There remain the Round and the Square towers of the fortifications, the Gothic church of the Carmelites, an Empire town hall housing a market hall and the memory of a cloister sold piece by piece and re-erected in New York, at the Cloisters.
