What stands there
1 concealment followed by a rediscovery half a century later
According to tradition, the stone statue of the Virgin was hidden in a marsh in 1570 to protect it from the destruction of the Wars of Religion. Forgotten for half a century, it is said to have been found in 1620 by a drover whose animal stopped still to lick it; the cart carrying the statue is said to have halted of its own accord on the present site of the sanctuary. A story comparable to other regional legends of statues hidden and rediscovered (Bétharram, Sarrance), recorded from tradition.
