Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Dax
Dax
The former Gothic cathedral of Dax collapsed in 1646; the present building, in the classical style, was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, with a main facade completed in 1894 by the Parisian architect Paul Gallois. The only medieval element preserved is the Portal of the Apostles, a group of Gothic sculptures of the early 14th century, originally the central portal of the west front before being moved inside the building in the 19th century; it was listed as a monument historique (historic monument) as early as 1884, the cathedral as a whole in 1946. The interior preserves 16th-century canons' stalls, 18th-century altars of polychrome marble attributed to the Mazzetti brothers, sculptors of Swiss origin settled in Avignon, and an organ of 1785. The cathedral was a major stage on the Tours route of the Way of St James.
