Basilique Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Cordon
Valenciennes
According to local tradition, while plague was ravaging Valenciennes, the Virgin appeared on 31 August 1008 to the hermit Bertholin to announce the end of the scourge; on the following 7 September, a luminous cord is said to have miraculously encircled the town's ramparts, halting the epidemic there. In memory of this episode, unattested by contemporary historical sources, an annual procession (the Tour du Saint-Cordon) has ever since perpetuated a Marian devotion regarded as the founding cult of the present basilica.
