Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Grâce de Cambrai

Cambrai

Period
Former abbey church of Saint-Sépulcre, rebuilt from 1696 to about 1702; cathedral since 1804

A hushed Baroque half-light, discreet guardian of Fénelon's tomb and of a centuries-old Marian icon.

The former Gothic cathedral of Cambrai, whose spire rose to 114 metres, was entirely demolished between 1796 and 1809 after its confiscation as national property. It was the former Benedictine abbey church of Saint-Sépulcre, a classical building rebuilt between 1696 and about 1702, that became the substitute cathedral in 1804. It preserves the tomb of Fénelon, carved by David d'Angers, as well as the venerated icon of Notre-Dame de Grâce (Our Lady of Grace), the object of an unbroken Marian pilgrimage since the 15th century.

Getting there : Listed as a monument historique, open to visitors (closed from 5 October 2026 to 26 January 2027 according to the diocese); chapel of Notre-Dame de Grâce, a place of Marian pilgrimage
