What stands there
Apparition of 17 January 1871 to four children, before the eyes of a crowd of villagers who saw nothing

According to Catholic tradition, the Virgin appeared on 17 January 1871 to four children of Pontmain — Eugène and Joseph Barbedette, Françoise Richer and Jeanne-Marie Lebossé — gradually revealing to them a message of hope in the starry sky, before the eyes of a crowd of villagers who, for their part, saw nothing. Established and verifiable fact: the Bishop of Laval officially recognised the apparition on 2 February 1872 under the title of Our Lady of Hope, a recognition confirmed when the sanctuary was raised to the rank of minor basilica in 1905.
