What stands there
Rocky sanctuary founded in 708, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Outside administrative Brittany, but the cradle of the legend: oral tradition ranks this rock — dedicated to the archangel who slays the dragon — as the first of the seven 'sacred hills' of ancient historical Armorica, a territory that once reached far beyond today's region. According to tradition, the Archangel Michael appeared in 708 to Bishop Aubert of Avranches and ordered him to build a sanctuary on this islet, then known as 'Mont Tombe.'
