Fort Saint-Pierre (Théâtre de la Mer)

Sète

Period
17th-century fortification, converted into an open-air theatre in the 20th century

An old fort turned open-air theatre, where the stone tiers look out over the Mediterranean.

Built to defend the entrance to the port of Sète, founded by Colbert and Louis XIV from 1666, Fort Saint-Pierre occupies a rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean. Relieved of its military role in the 20th century, it was converted into an open-air theatre, the Théâtre de la Mer, whose stone tiers follow the old fortified enclosure facing the sea horizon. The site today hosts some of the most popular music and theatre festivals on the Languedoc coast, including the Fiest'A Sète festival devoted to world music.

Getting there : The Théâtre de la Mer occupies the enclosure of Fort Saint-Pierre; open to the public during summer shows and festivals (notably Fiest'A Sète).
