Notre-Dame de la Salette (Sète)

Sète

Period
Built in 1861

A chapel-belvedere bristling with ex-votos, where the families of Sète's seafarers have come to pray for more than 160 years.

Perched on the summit of Mont Saint-Clair, the hill overlooking the port of Sète, the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette was built in 1861, fifteen years after the Marian apparition at La Salette in Isère. Its interior walls are covered with frescoes and an impressive number of maritime ex-votos, plaques and naive paintings offered by the families of Sète's fishermen. The sanctuary carries on the tradition, long-standing in Sète, of venerating the Virgin as protector of seafarers. From its forecourt and the viewpoint, the view takes in the whole port, the Étang de Thau and the Languedoc coast.

Getting there : Reachable on foot or by car from the centre of Sète, at the summit of Mont Saint-Clair; adjoining viewpoint, open to visitors.

Opening times and access details are given as a guide only: check before you set out.
