Fort de Buoux

Buoux

Dimensions
Natural rock shelter (the Baume du Fort) of 800 m²; rocky spur in the Luberon
Period
Neolithic occupation; protohistoric oppidum; medieval fortress from the 13th to the 17th century

A rocky pinnacle bristling with ruins and silos hollowed out of the stone, suspended above the gorges of the Aiguebrun.

Perched on a rocky spur at the heart of the Luberon massif, this fortified site occupies the location of a former oppidum and preserves traces of occupation going back to the Neolithic, with cave dwellings and silos cut into the rock. A true fortress developed here from the 13th century, before being captured twice by the Huguenots and then razed on the orders of Louis XIV. The site retains a secret protohistoric staircase cut into the rock, the remains of a medieval church and a natural rock shelter of 800 m² occupied from prehistoric times.

Getting there : Listed as a historic monument; site under archaeological study (LA3M / CNRS / Aix-Marseille University since 2007), open to visitors
