Ermitage et chapelle Saint-Gens

Le Beaucet

Period
12th-century Romanesque chapel, built near the tomb of Saint Gens (died c. 1127)

A quiet place of contemplation, away from the crowds, where the spring still flows at the foot of the hermit's rock.

Nestling in an isolated valley of the Monts de Vaucluse a few kilometres from the hilltop village of Le Beaucet, this 12th-century Romanesque chapel was built near the rock where the hermit Gens was buried; he died around 1127 and has been venerated ever since as the patron saint of ploughmen and a bringer of rain. His relics, moved for a time to the village church in the 17th century, were brought back to the church of his hermitage in 1972. Every year the sanctuary is the goal of one of the largest traditional pilgrimages in Provence, made on foot between Monteux and the hermitage.

Getting there : Annual pilgrimage on foot between Monteux and the hermitage, one of the largest pilgrimages in Provence; free access by a path from Le Beaucet
