Perched on the summit of a volcanic pinnacle reached by 268 steps cut into the rock, this chapel was consecrated in 961 by Bishop Godescalc and enlarged in the 12th century with a nave, ambulatory and gallery. One of the very first monuments placed on Prosper Mérimée's first list of monuments historiques in 1840, it has several times been voted the "French people's favourite monument". According to legend, Joan of Arc's mother, Isabelle Romée, prayed here in 1429.
