Tour du Papegault et légende de la Cane
Montfort-sur-Meu
The most impressive remnant of the town walls of this Petite Cité de Caractère on the doorstep of Brocéliande, the Tour du Papegault owes its name to an annual contest in which archers and crossbowmen aimed at a wooden parrot fixed to its top. The castle was taken by Richard the Lionheart in 1198 before being retaken and ruined the same year. The town, long called "Montfort-la-Cane", owes that nickname to a 15th-century legend: a young girl held captive in the castle tower by the local lord is said to have been turned into a duck by Saint Nicholas so that she could escape, and to return every year to show herself on the banks of the river Meu.
