Fontaine Saint-Méen de Treignac

Treignac

Dimensions

Period
Fountain at the origin of the first settlement of the quartier des Églises (Wikipédia, undated); present building undated in the sources read
What stands there
A plaque bears two years (not specified in the source read).

At Treignac, at the high point of the old quarter called ‘Les Églises’, a fountain bears the name of Saint Mewan. According to Wikipédia, it is what ‘was the starting point of this settlement’: the first houses of Treignac grouped around the churches of Saint-Martin, Saint-Léobon and Saint-Jean, not far from the fountain. This claim is undated in the source read. The Corrèze tourist office, in a treasure-hunt booklet for children, presents it as a ‘miraculous fountain’ that refreshes the visitor, but says nothing of its history or of the miracle. One goes down to it by the rue des Églises from the cemetery car park, and one can go inside to count the water outflows. Treignac is also a stage on the Way of Saint James of Compostela, but no text read links the fountain to this route. This entry is deliberately short: it is not known here what ailment the water was supposed to cure or when the cult began.

Getting there: Quartier des Églises, rue des Églises, at Treignac; one goes down to it from the car park of the cimetière des Églises. A tourist-office treasure hunt passes there. Coordinates: fontaine Saint-Méen in OpenStreetMap (Nominatim), a precise point.
