Ermitage Saint-Pancrace de Grambois

Grambois

Period
Chapel of the 14th century; hermitage and cemetery of the 19th century; inscribed as a historic monument in 1995
What stands there
A chapel and a romantic cemetery in a clearing of the Luberon

In a forest clearing, north of Grambois, a chapel and a hermitage stand beside a cemetery ringed with cypresses. The whole now belongs to private owners. The chapel dates back to the 14th century and a porch, with a niche, was added in the 18th. This porch bears a painted decoration, which is what the official record mentions first. The cemetery dates from the 19th century. There are tall mausoleums, including a pyramid, among the cypresses. Which hermit lived here, and when, the sources read do not say. The whole has been inscribed as a historic monument since 13 March 1995, with the chapel, the adjoining hermitage, the cemetery and their surroundings.
