Tilleul de Sully d'Étables

Étables

Period
‘Said to have been planted at Sully's request in 1600’ (DREAL record); site listed as a natural monument on 10 November 1936
What stands there
A lime tree known as a Sully tree, listed as a natural monument in 1936, near the village bell tower

The lime tree of Étables stands near the bell tower of the church of Saint-Martin, at the junction of two village streets. The official record of the listed site, drawn up by the regional environment directorate, calls it a ‘lime tree known as Sully’. It ‘is said to have been planted at Sully's request in 1600’, ‘like many others’, the record states in the conditional. Tradition does indeed attribute to Henri IV's minister an order to plant a tree in front of every church in the kingdom, but no text attests to it. The State listed it as a natural monument on 10 November 1936, under the 1930 law on sites. Its dimensions and its real age have not been published.
