What stands there
reused Gallo-Roman stones

Consecrated on 5 August 1095 by Pope Urban II in person, then on his way to the Council of Clermont where he was to preach the First Crusade — the dedication stone, carved for the occasion, can still be seen in the south wall of the building. Several of its stone blocks were reused from Gallo-Roman constructions of ancient Valentia. Destroyed during the Wars of Religion and rebuilt in the 17th century, its choir has since housed the tomb of Pope Pius VI, who died in Valence in 1799, a prisoner of the Directory.
