What stands there
the oldest cathedral in Lorraine

Built from 990 on the Rhenish Romanesque plan characteristic of this frontier architecture between France and the Holy Roman Empire, it is the oldest cathedral in Lorraine and one of the oldest in Europe still in use — consecrated in person by Pope Eugene III on 11 November 1147. A fire in 1755 cost it two of its four original bell towers, never rebuilt; the building was remodelled in Baroque and Rococo style, with a baldachin inspired by that of St Peter's in Rome installed at the crossing of the transept.
