According to the foundation legend, woodcutters heard voices singing the Ave Maria near a spring and there discovered a statue of the Virgin, afterwards guarded by a hermit. Historically established: the statue was taken to safety in 1638, during the Thirty Years' War, at the château of Neuville-en-Verdunois by Barbe d'Ernecourt; the original statue was destroyed at the Revolution (1793) and replaced by another old statue, set up again near the spring around 1644.
