Église Saint-Rémy de Domrémy

Domrémy-la-Pucelle

Dimensions
On the bank of the Meuse, in the middle of the village, adjoining the birthplace of Joan of Arc; 1.5 km below the slope of the Bois-Chenu
Period
A 13th-century building, enlarged several times (keystones dated 1582, 1585, 1698, 1904), reoriented in 1824; restored in 2005
What stands there
The church where a child born about 1412 was baptised, ten paces from her home

Domrémy is not a parish: the mother church is at Greux, a kilometre to the north, and the diocese is that of Toul. Saint-Rémy is nonetheless the village church, built in the 13th century, and it was there that the daughter of Jacques d'Arc was baptised, about 1412, by the parish priest Jean Minet — the name is given by the witnesses heard at the nullity trial of 1456. The building has changed a great deal: enlarged several times, as the dates carved on the keystones show, it was entirely turned round in 1824, the choir taking the place of the old porch and the entrance opening beneath the bell tower. From Joan's day there remain the main fabric, a few pieces of furnishing and a 13th-century stoup that generations of hands have polished. The birthplace, set against the same slope, is a few metres away: the judges at Rouen, in 1431, would question Joan about that nearness, about the bells she liked to hear ring and whose ringing she demanded of the village bell-ringer. It is the most ordinary place on the route, and the only one where we can be sure she passed almost every day of her childhood.
