Cathédrale Notre-Dame-du-Bourg de Digne

Digne-les-Bains

Dimensions
Romanesque building over several earlier sanctuaries
Period
Late 12th century, on early Christian origins
What stands there
former cathedral, abandoned as early as 1591

Former cathedral of Digne, whose Romanesque construction began in the last quarter of the 12th century on a site already steeped in Christian history: archaeological excavations have revealed several religious buildings that succeeded one another here from late Antiquity onwards. Abandoned as early as 1591 during the Wars of Religion in favour of the new cathedral of Saint-Jérôme, built higher up on the heights for reasons of safety, it has kept its original Romanesque character intact, unlike most French cathedrals, remodelled over the centuries.
