Prieuré de Ganagobie

Ganagobie

Period
Founded in 965 (Cluniac monks); church and mosaics from the 12th century
What stands there
Romanesque mosaic among the largest in France (around 130 m²)

Isolated on a wooded plateau overlooking the valley of the Durance between Peyruis and Lurs, the priory of Ganagobie was founded in 965 by monks from Cluny, to whom the land had been given by the counts of Provence. The 12th-century Romanesque church preserves a remarkable carved portal as well as a mosaic pavement depicting fantastic animals, griffins and scenes drawn from medieval bestiaries, one of the most extensive of its kind surviving in France. Abandoned and then restored several times, the priory regained a Benedictine monastic community in 1992.

Getting there : Portal and church listed as a monument historique (historic monument); monastery inhabited by a Benedictine community, cloister closed to the public, church and forecourt open to visitors
