12th century, remodelled in the 13th century
What stands there
the oldest palatine chapel in the south of France after Albi

Tucked away on the first floor of a tower of the Palais Vieux (Old Palace) of the Archbishops of Narbonne, this private archiepiscopal chapel is the oldest surviving palatine chapel in the south of France, second only to that of the episcopal palace at Albi. Its great round-arched window, framed by twisted columns with acanthus capitals and suspended above the courtyard known as the "cour de la Madeleine", makes it one of the most refined pieces of Romanesque art in Narbonne, remodelled in the 13th century when the neighbouring cathedral was being built.
