Larrazet
Larrazet
Larrazet, in the valley of the Gimone between Beaumont-de-Lomagne and Castelsarrasin, is "the first bastide of the abbey of Belleperche, founded between 1253 and 1254". Its customs, granted in 1265 in Occitan, say nothing of the division of plots, a sign of a town already formed; the viscount of Terride became co-lord there in 1284. Its golden age came in the 16th century with Jean III de Cardailhac, abbot of Belleperche from 1485 to 1543, who rebuilt the abbatial castle, with its flamboyant Gothic front and its fine rib-vaulted staircase, and the church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, raised between 1500 and 1530. The village, built on a regular plan, keeps covered passages and streets lined with half-timbered houses from the 16th to the 19th century, without a public square inside the enclosure, which was ringed even before 1268 by a ditch that became an aqueduct. The castle was plundered and largely destroyed at the Revolution.
