Beaumont-de-Lomagne
Beaumont-de-Lomagne
Beaumont-de-Lomagne is the great royal bastide of the Lomagne, on the bank of the Gimone, halfway between Montauban and Auch. It was born in 1276 of an act of paréage between the Cistercian abbey of Grandselve and King Philip the Bold, represented by his seneschal of Toulouse Eustache de Beaumarchais, and received in 1278 a charter of customs that Wikipedia judges "very liberal for the period". From 1280 a church with a flat chevet of Cistercian inspiration was going up, its bell tower of the 15th century recalling that of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse. Taken by the English in 1345, delivered in 1350, a Catholic town ringed by Protestant ones, sold to the king of Navarre in 1577 and then to the prince of Condé in 1639, the town has been through every storm of the Midi. It keeps a market hall of the 14th century with an enormous timber frame, covered arcades, some fifteen town houses and the birthplace of the mathematician Pierre de Fermat.
Getting there : Free access to the town. A tourist centre is installed in the hôtel de Fermat, and a Fermat museum occupies the mathematician's birthplace.
