Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Moissac
Moissac
According to legend, the abbey was founded by Clovis himself; historians see it rather as the work of Saint Didier, bishop of Cahors, in the mid-7th century. Attached to Cluny in 1047, it enjoyed its golden age in the 11th–12th centuries with the creation of two masterpieces of Romanesque art: a carved tympanum depicting Christ in Majesty surrounded by the twenty-four elders of the Apocalypse, one of the most accomplished Romanesque sculptural ensembles in Europe, and a cloister with 76 capitals, no two alike, considered the oldest surviving historiated cloister in the West. A major stop on the pilgrim roads to Compostela, listed as such by UNESCO.
