What stands there
Monastic settlement downstream of the Lower Lake

Gleann Dá Loch: the valley of the two lakes. In the 6th century a hermit priest, Kevin, sought a retreat here for its serenity and its remoteness — and it was precisely the remoteness that drew disciples. They built churches and dwellings in the valley below, and the settlement became one of the leading religious schools of Ireland. The site was destroyed in 1398. What remains is a round tower thirty-three metres high and a high cross that bears the founder's name.
