Period
Fast attributed to Saint Patrick in 441; summit chapel consecrated on 30 July 1905
What stands there
Annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage, last Sunday of July

The Irish simply call it 'the Reek.' Tradition holds that Saint Patrick fasted forty days there in 441 on the mountain then called Cruachan Aigle, and built a church there — a story modeled on Moses at Sinai, which earns the summit its other name, 'Ireland's Sinai.' The present small chapel was consecrated on 30 July 1905; a plaque marked its centenary in 2005. The Reek Sunday pilgrimage is held there every year.

Getting there : Free ascent, stony and steep path; some pilgrims climb barefoot
