Nicknamed "the heart of Bavaria"

Altötting — Ötting in the Middle Ages — lies in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, and the town presents itself as the heart of Bavaria. The sanctuary is arranged around an ancient octagonal chapel that houses a wooden Black Madonna. It is the great Marian pilgrimage site of southern Germany, and the square around it is lined with the painted ex-votos that pilgrims have accumulated there.
