Basilique de Mariazell

Mariazell

Dimensions
Minor basilica, national shrine; wooden statue of the Virgin
Period
Territory given to the monastery of St Lambrecht around 1103; renovation from 1992 to 2007
What stands there
Austria's foremost place of pilgrimage

The foundation story is disarmingly simple: around 1103, the territory was given to the Benedictines of St Lambrecht; one of them, named Magnus, was travelling with a small wooden statue of the Virgin when a rock barred his way. He built a cell on the spot — Maria Zell, Mary's cell. The statue is still there, and the shrine holds the status of Austria's national shrine. The building was restored between 1992 and 2007.
