What stands there
The most complete medieval monastic ensemble north of the Alps
Founded in 1147, Maulbronn is presented as the most complete and best-preserved medieval monastic ensemble north of the Alps — which, for Cistercian buildings, amounts to a statistical miracle. Its architecture stands at the turning point between Romanesque and Gothic, and it counted for a great deal in the spread of Gothic towards central and northern Europe. The church porch, known as the Paradise, dates from 1210. The monastery preserves an exceptional hydraulic system of channels and reservoirs.
