Local legend makes it a staging post in the flight of the famous "Cathar treasure" spirited out of Montségur on the night of Palm Sunday 1244, before the castle fell. A tale largely reconstructed after the event, but one that has given the site a lasting aura of mystery in the Sabarthès, the upper valley of the Ariège. Paintings in the caves surrounding the summit are sometimes interpreted as a representation of the Grail, though this reading remains disputed by specialists.
