Chapelle Notre-Dame de Sabart

Tarascon-sur-Ariège

Dimensions
around 480 m above sea level
Period
Religious occupation attested as early as the 9th century, pilgrimage at its height in the 15th century
What stands there
2 attempts to move the statue, which came back on its own each time according to the legend

The legend, handed down over generations, has it that Charlemagne, returning from a victory over the Saracens, saw his horse rear up before a Lady of light; two white heifers are then said to have marked the spot where a bronze statue lay, inscribed "Notre-Dame de la Victoire". Taken twice to the abbey of Foix, it is said to have returned each time on its own to Sabart. No archaeological evidence confirms this Carolingian foundation; occupation of the site is, on the other hand, attested as early as the 9th century, with a pilgrimage documented from the 12th century.
