one of the rare Cathar sites with a museum display
Former fief of the Villemur family, vassals of the Counts of Foix, retaken by Raymond VII of Toulouse in 1243. Sold as national property at the Revolution and then worked as a quarry, the site has now been consolidated and is one of the rare Cathar castles open to the public with a museum trail.
