What stands there
former fief of the powerful Trencavel family
On the edge of the Montagne Noire, this castle was the residence of the viscountly Trencavel family — the same who held Carcassonne — before falling into the hands of Simon de Montfort in the very first months of the Albigensian Crusade, in 1209. In 1979, works in the village brought to light the "Saissac treasure": some 2,000 silver deniers struck between 1250 and 1270 under the royal authority of Louis IX, the largest royal medieval coin hoard ever discovered in the Languedoc, now displayed in the castle itself.
