Besieged as early as 1209, in the first weeks of the Albigensian Crusade, under its young Cathar viscount Raymond-Roger Trencavel, before passing under French royal administration. Restored in the 19th century by Viollet-le-Duc, it is today inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
