the largest of the "Five Sons of Carcassonne"
Nicknamed "Carcassonne in the sky" for a size comparable to the great city itself, it is the largest of the five royal castles built as a line of defence facing Aragon after the Treaty of Corbeil (1258). An Aragonese castle never besieged or captured by the crusaders, it was simply purchased by Louis IX.
