What stands there
Two centuries of oblivion before the rediscovery of the tomb

Bassoues is a Gascon bastide dominated by a 43 m keep, but its religious heart lies below: an 11th-century basilica built over a tomb. The tradition, set down in writing by the canons and passed to the Bollandists in 1691, makes Fris a son of the king of the Frisians, who took refuge at the court of Charles Martel after his conversion. Sent in 732 to pursue the Saracen rearguard falling back towards the Pyrenees after Poitiers, he is said to have been mortally wounded by an arrow at the place called l'Étendard, his horse carrying him as far as the river Guiroue, where he died. Two centuries later, a peasant noticed that one of the cows in his herd came every day to lick a stone hidden in the undergrowth; clearing it, he uncovered a sarcophagus containing a warrior in armour, and a spring at once gushed from the ground. The strongest oxen could not shift the funeral cart: only the little cow, harnessed alone, drew the remains to the church, where miracles multiplied. Cardinal de Clermont-Lodève enlarged the building between 1510 and 1540 with two Renaissance portals, one of which bears the inscription filius regis Frisiae; the church was burnt by the Protestants in 1569, only the crypt surviving, then rebuilt in 1623 and restored in 1888. The spring born of the tomb is still there, sheltered by a 19th-century chapel raised by Abbé Blajan, and is still visited by pilgrims who credit it with healing powers.
