中世纪时，这座建在一位传说中隐修士墓上的圣所，曾是整个基督教世界的第四大朝圣地，仅次于耶路撒冷、罗马和孔波斯特拉——来自欧洲各地的大批人群前来敬拜圣吉尔（Gilles）的圣物。其雕刻的立面是普罗旺斯罗曼艺术的杰作，饰有表现基督受难的饰带，启发了几位美国建筑师，他们在纽约和匹兹堡几乎一模一样地仿造了它。1562年宗教战争期间，胡格诺派毁坏了这座修道院教堂，然而它仍完好地保存着一座螺旋形的旋梯，技艺之精湛，至今仍是石匠“同伴会”（compagnons）成员必经的学艺一站。
