波尔多基督教的摇篮，建在一座巨大的露天墓地之上，考古发掘出了大理石石棺、装在双耳瓶里的儿童墓，甚至还有被重新用于基督教墓葬的古代异教还愿祭坛。自12世纪起便是孔波斯特拉朝圣之路上的重要一站，这座大殿在中世纪的声望，部分来自直接出自《罗兰之歌》的一则传说：查理曼皇帝运回倒在龙塞斯瓦耶斯（Roncevaux）的外甥遗体时，据说把罗兰的象牙号角本身放在了祭坛上——就是骑士当年徒劳吹响以求援的那支著名号角。
