Peyro Clabado et le chaos du Sidobre
Lacrouzette
The Sidobre is the largest expanse of granite rocks in France: about 102 km², between 400 and 707 m in altitude, some ten kilometres east of Castres. Erosion has exposed rounded boulders stacked into chaotic piles, to which locals have given the names of animals and objects: the Trois Fromages (Three Cheeses), the Chapeau de Napoléon (Napoleon's Hat), the Roc de l'Oie (Goose Rock), the Siège du Diable (Devil's Seat). The Peyro Clabado, the "nailed stone" in Occitan, is its emblem: nearly 800 tonnes resting on a base barely a square metre wide, with nothing visually explaining the balance. The Sidobre tourist office officially presents the massif as a "land of legends" and attaches a tale to each rock. The Roc de l'Oie is said to be a giant goose belonging to a sorcerer who raised poultry: allowed out each night to brood a colossal egg near Crémaussel, she had to be back before dawn; one morning she forgot the time and the sorcerer turned her to stone along with her egg. Tradition has it that the stone bird can still be heard moaning on nights of a full moon and a strong autan wind. Other tales feature giants whose flocks of geese fought over the plateau, and a devil in love with a farmer's wife who waited for him in vain on the rock known as the Fauteuil du Diable (Devil's Armchair). On the Peyro Clabado trail, the Chêne Enchanté (Enchanted Oak) of the Pic des Fourches is said to bring a year of prosperity to anyone who lingers at its foot, a belief that arose among granite cutters in the late 19th century.
