Fougerolles-Saint-Valbert

Dimensions
Rock shelter enclosed by an entrance pavilion from 1563, topped in the 18th century by a central building and a chapel
Period

What stands there
60 hectares — the extent of the animal park that now surrounds the hermitage

The son of a wealthy Frankish lord, Valbert exchanged arms for the monastic rule and became, around 629, the third abbot of Luxeuil, which he brought to its peak: under his abbacy, the abbey became one of the most influential in Europe. Tradition holds that he first withdrew to this cave, then returned to it intermittently, seeking a more secluded and austere life, until his death in 668. Canonised, he drew thousands of pilgrims to his shelter, which was transformed over the centuries into a genuine rock-cut shrine: an entrance pavilion built in 1563 above the cave, a central building and chapel in 1757, a monumental stone fountain housing the spring in 1758, formal French gardens, and a pilgrim's house in the 19th century. Confiscated during the Revolution, bought back by the Church in 1843, and left abandoned after 1905, the complex has been restored since 1961 by a volunteer association; it has been a listed historic monument since 1914. Excavations in 2009 revealed beneath the site a sandstone quarry worked from the 6th to the 8th century, whose stone was used to cut the sarcophagi of the monks buried at the Église Saint-Martin in Luxeuil — evidence that the valley was already frequented in Valbert's time. The cave, the spring and the chapel today form one of the most atmospheric spots in Haute-Saône, off the beaten track.
