Local tradition relates that in 1884 a farmer lost in the snow on this plateau of the Pays des Mille Étangs (the Land of a Thousand Ponds) prayed to the Virgin and miraculously found his way; a statuette is then said to have appeared to him in a niche cut into a wooden post planted on the spot. In thanksgiving, he had the chapel built on the very site of the reported apparition, where the original statuette and post are still shown to visitors. This account, spread mainly by local tourist offices rather than by any early ecclesiastical source, should be taken as popular legend rather than established fact.
