Montaigut-sur-Save

Dimensions
about 210 m above sea level
Period
Chapel founded in the 12th century, destroyed during the Wars of Religion then rebuilt in 1673
What stands there
1 apparition to a ploughman named Raymond

According to tradition, the devotion goes back to an apparition of the Virgin in the 12th century to a ploughman named Raymond, who is said to have given his name to the place. A first chapel, visited by Saint Dominic in 1213, was destroyed during the Wars of Religion and rebuilt in 1673; it preserves 17th-century Baroque altarpieces and is today listed as a monument historique. While the antiquity of the pilgrimage is well documented, the details of the founding apparition, handed down orally, lie beyond any direct historical verification.
