Bastide de Léguevin
Léguevin
Léguevin, twenty leagues from Auch, hence its Occitan name Legavin, was first a sauveté of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, recorded as early as 1108 when noblemen gave them lands between the streams of the Courbet and the Paradis. A halt on the via Tolosana for the pilgrims to Compostela, the village was born in the 13th century around a hospital and a church. On 28 November 1309, an agreement of paréage between the Hospitallers and Jourdain V put an end to their quarrel and made Léguevin a bastide; a square in the town bears that date. Occupied by the English from 1344 and crossed by the Black Prince in 1355, the village fortified itself. The Wars of Religion saw Montluc pass through, and a Protestant troop that sacked it; Henry of Navarre, the future Henry IV, was its lord from 1572 to 1579. A church with a bell-gable, the château de Castelnouvel (1540), the halle Piquot (1834) and a posting house make up the heritage of this former staging post.
