In April 1803, a girl from a nearby farm, Cécile Mille, is said to have seen near an oak "a lady dressed in white", surrounded by young girls, rising up in a bright light. On the following 15 August, a light bursting from the trunk of the tree is said to have led to the discovery of a 17th-century terracotta statuette of the Virgin and Child, no doubt long enclosed in the trunk. In 1844, Archbishop Mathieu of Besançon, a future cardinal, ordered an inquiry that heard more than forty witnesses; he officially recognised the account and had the present pilgrimage chapel built.
