Basilique Notre-Dame d'Avioth

Avioth

Dimensions
Large Flamboyant Gothic basilica, with an adjoining small structure (the Recevresse)
Period
Built from the late 13th to the 15th century, on an earlier site of devotion
What stands there
1 lime-wood statue, carbon-dated to around 1095

Tradition relates the chance discovery, around the 12th century, of a statue of the Virgin in a thorn bush, and its repeated return to this spot each time an attempt was made to move it to the church — a foundation legend typical of many medieval Marian sanctuaries. This supposed attachment to the place is said to have prompted the building of a chapel and then of the present Gothic basilica (13th–15th century). The small structure known as "la Recevresse" today commemorates the site of the discovery.
