Église Saint-Gilles (sanctuaire des apparitions de L'Île-Bouchard)

L'Île-Bouchard

Dimensions
around 40 m above sea level (Vienne valley)
Period
parish church of Romanesque origin, extensively remodelled from the 15th to the 19th century
What stands there
4 seers; apparitions reported from 8 to 14 December 1947

From 8 to 14 December 1947, four girls aged 7 to 12 claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary, accompanied by the Archangel Gabriel, in the church of Saint-Gilles. Witnesses reported unsettling phenomena, including the unexplained healing of one of the children's eyesight. By a decree of 8 December 2001, the Archbishop of Tours authorised pilgrimages and public worship — without pronouncing on the supernatural character of the events, which the archdiocese had said in 1997 it was not in a position to guarantee; the sanctuary has since drawn a national pilgrimage.
