What stands there
Statue hidden in a sewer during the French Revolution to escape destruction, then restored to worship in the 19th century

Tradition relates that Ermengarde, mother of the legendary founder Lydéric, had an apparition of the Virgin around 640 that gave rise to the Marian cult of Lille. A stone statue, given according to tradition in the 11th century, became an object of pilgrimage under the name of Notre-Dame de la Treille, protected by a wrought-iron grille. During the Revolution a chaplain hid it in a sewer to save it from destruction; recovered intact, it was reinstalled and then crowned in 1874 in the cathedral built for the purpose, completed only in 1999.
