Cathédrale Saint-Mammès de Langres

Langres

Period
1150–1196, classical facade rebuilt 1761–1768

A Romanesque-Gothic vessel at the heart of a walled town, dominating the Langres plateau.

Commissioned around 1140 by Bishop Geoffroy de La Roche-Vanneau and built between 1150 and 1196, the cathedral combines Burgundian Romanesque volumes inspired by the third abbey church of Cluny with nascent Gothic innovations. The head of Saint Mammes was entrusted to it as a relic in 1209, making Langres a place of pilgrimage. A fire destroyed the roof timbers of the nave in 1314, leading to the construction of radiating chapels between 1324 and 1366, while the Renaissance chapel of the Holy Cross was built from 1547 to 1551. The west facade was demolished and rebuilt in classical style between 1761 and 1768.
